SGI Commits to Collaborative Projects for Nuclear Ban with ICAN
SGI representatives participated in the ICAN Campaigners Meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland, on April 21and 22, prior to the second session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2020 NPT Review Conference. Activists and experts from around the globe gathered to discuss how best to promote an early entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) as well as its universalization.
During discussions, SGI shared its approach and work plan on how it would contribute to strengthening momentum toward the universalization of the TPNW as a Buddhist faith-based organization, using the “Everything You Treasure” exhibition and other educational tools.
SGI Executive Director of Peace and Global Issues Kazuo Ishiwatari also exchanged views with ICAN Executive Director Beatrice Fihn on future cooperation toward the shared goal of abolition of nuclear weapons.
In a plenary session on April 21, Hayley Ramsay-Jones, Director of the SGI Office for UN Affairs in Geneva, updated participants on the recent activities of ICAN’s faith-based partner organizations around the world.
